🏠 Plans to transform a former independent hotel in Blackpool into assisted living accommodation for up to 12 residents have been thrown out. The owners of the Ardsley Hotel, at 20 Woodfield Road, South Shore, submitted an application to Blackpool Council proposing a change of use for a property which is still classed as an existing hotel (Use Class C1) in planning terms, but no longer operates as one. They argued it would now be better served as assisted living accommodation. A viability report on behalf of the plans says the property was previously operated as a small independent hotel but was located within an area of Blackpool that had “experienced a significant decline in traditional tourism, particularly affecting smaller, independently run hotels. ” But Blackpool’s planning officer said the property was not suitable for what the applicants intended, on several grounds, and refused the proposals.

🗼 Blackpool’s holiday trade is in optimistic mood for the forthcoming season and anticipates that the resort is on the up again. Hoteliers who attended this week’s busy StayBlackpool Trade Show and Open Day said a number of factors were at play which gave them confidence about 2026. Many felt that uncertainty over the Middle East crisis and the rising cost of fuel could help draw in more ‘staycation’ visitors to the town. Ian White of StayBlackpool, a premier trade association for holiday accommodation in the resort and on the Fylde coast, said: “I’m very encouraged by the way things are looking. “Kate Shane of Blackpool Tourism has declared how she wants to work with us and I believe their new Ultimate Ticket will encourage people to stay longer in the town, and bring more money in. “Now Blackpool is on the short list for City of Culture, we’re also seeing the town being talked about in a positive light”

✏️ Proposals to convert one of Blackpool’s most distinctive buildings into a house have been given the green light by planners. The imposing property on Lytham Road, which features a side turret, was formally a freemasons lodge with meeting rooms in the outbuilding. A planning application was lodged with Blackpool Council for conversion of the property into a single dwellinghouse with the outbuilding used as a nonself-contained residential annex. Approving the scheme, the planning officer said there was no reason to refuse the application.

The figure, whose duties include looking after children’s welfare, was taken into custody by detectives earlier this week and quizzed over the alleged offences.

He was held alongside a woman who is not believed to be linked to the school, which teaches hundreds of children on the Fylde coast.

The teacher has since been released under investigation, while the woman has been bailed, Lancashire Police told The Blackpool Lead.
