Hello and welcome to The Blackpool Lead.

A full family rather than ‘fighting age men’, who did not arrive by boat, who are fleeing a genuinely catastrophic conflict and with a child doing her very best to contribute to our society. On paper, the family-of-seven from Gaza booted out of the Metropole Hotel tick every box that asylum seeker sceptics say they’re looking for.

None of that has stopped them from being moved to what is now their third asylum seeker hotel since arriving in September 2024 - this time for what they perceive as a punishment for speaking with the media about the state of the Metropole.

We are halfway through November, which means time is running out to get a discounted subscription to The Blackpool Lead and show your support for proper journalism in your town.

The Blackpool Lead can only keep doing what we do with more paid subscribers. Our role is to hold politicians to account locally in a way that would not happen without us. In November, you can take a paid subscription and get 30% off - so there’s never been a better time to back us.

🏠 Plans to demolish a row of terraced houses as part of a major sports-themed regeneration project in Blackpool have finally taken a step forward. A planning application has been lodged with Blackpool Council for demolition of 15 houses on Henry Street, the houses which back onto the Bloomfield Road football stadium and which have been acquired by the council via Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO). The homes need to be bulldozed to allow work to proceed on two schemes – plans for a new East Stand at Bloomfield Road stadium and the Revoe Community Sports Village, the creation of new pitches at the side of the stadium.

🎡 Fresh proposals for two rides to operate either side of Blackpool’s famous South Pier have been submitted to planners months after being refused. The Blackpool Pier company has lodged an application for a Certificate of Proposed Lawfulness (CLOPED) for the siting of two rides – a Log Flume and a Star Flyer – on either side of South Pier Headland area. They argue that these rides will prove a major attraction and help boost tourism. Previously, a full planning application by the company was for the two rides to be in place for a period between April 1 and October 31 each year.

🎸 Calls have been made for a world-class arena to be built on the Blackpool Central site which has been earmarked for multi-million pound regeneration projects. Blackpool South MP Chris Webb has renewed his campaign for an arena following Blackpool Council’s announcement that two expert development firms have been appointed to help shape new plans for the land and attract fresh private sector investment. In less than 24 hours of launching a petition for an arena, nearly 1,000 local residents signed in support of Webb’s proposal. It highlights strong public enthusiasm for an arena capable of hosting major concerts, sporting events, e-sports, exhibitions and conferences.

Treatment of Palestinian family-of-seven branded ‘horrifying and inhumane’

The Metropole Hotel

By Luke Beardsworth

A refugee family-of-seven booted from Blackpool’s controversial Metropole Hotel after raising concerns about their living conditions with journalists have been subject to inhumane treatment.

That is the verdict of a leading UK charity fighting for the rights of asylum seekers.

The Blackpool Lead reported last week that a family-of-seven had been moved out the Metropole Hotel, the centre of concern and criticism about the state of the building, to Telford with almost zero notice.

The father of the family believes they were forcibly moved in retaliation from the hotel’s management after speaking with ITV News journalists. Serco, who is contracted by the UK government to manage the hotel and others like it, denies this .

Along with causing general disruption and upheaval for a family stuck waiting to hear if their asylum claim will be accepted by the Home Office, the eldest daughter was dealt a serious setback to her education as she looks to adapt her nursing qualifications to the UK.

The family left Gaza for Iran in early 2024 to escape as the area was being reduced to ruins. It was when they were faced with being returned that they turned to the UK, arriving by plane to London in September 2024. They were placed in accommodation at Daresbury Park in Cheshire - another asylum hotel - until its closure in early summer 2025 when they were moved to Blackpool.

On October 23, two members of the family spoke with ITV News about the conditions at The Metropole - concerns that were first reported by The Blackpool Lead in July.
