Plans to axe coastguard volunteer pay branded a 'car crash'
Coastguard rescuers help to keep us safe - and they're about to be hit hard in the pocket
Hello and welcome to The Blackpool Lead.
It’s the peak of summer and barely a few days can be allowed to pass before we are told of the latest heroics from coastguards operating in Blackpool.
HM Coastguard is not the RNLI. It is run by the government rather than as a charity. But the Coastguard Rescue Service, who were involved in potentially saving a life at Rossall beach just last month, are volunteers.
They currently get £11 an hour for attending training and incidents. That’s going to change now and there are warnings that the impact is going to be significant.

🛎️ Neighbours of a run-down Blackpool hotel which was hit with a prohibition order a year ago say it has got even worse in the past 12 months. Local hoteliers want the owners of the OYO Blarney Stone Hotel to repair it and smarten it up because they say say it is blighting the holiday zone around it. Blackpool Council slapped an Emergency Prohibition Order (EPO) on the property, on Alexandra Road in South Shore, in May last year over a list of serious safety concerns, including bare wires and structural concerns. Neighbours believe the boarded-up property is still owned by OYO, also known as Oyo Rooms, but the company has said it does not own it and has no responsibility for how it is operated.
👷🏻♂️ Blackpool Council has vowed to complete a new housing development of 51 homes in Bispham despite being left £9.5m in debt after the developer went into administration. The homes were being built on a site between Faraday Way and Ryscar Way by Create Bispham Limited, part of Create Developments, after the council and Create entered into a development agreement in 2023 to redevelop the site. In April, Create Bispham Limited had to bring in administrators, with S&W Group being appointed. A Blackpool Council spokesperson said: “Building houses at Ryscar Way is key to creating more quality housing for the people of Blackpool.
🏠 Proposals to switch the use of an existing children’s home into a residential home for adults needing care have been approved by planners at Blackpool. A planning application was submitted to Blackpool Council in respect of a property on Beetham Place, close to Stanley Park. Despite the similar uses, a planning application was still required for the proposals, put forward by applicants the Priory Group, as they have different ‘use classifications’ in planning law. “We plan to continue the Ryscar Way development not just because of the housing need but for home owners already invested in the site. We will now endeavour to support and assist the completion of the site.”
Plans to axe coastguard volunteer pay branded a ’car crash’

Changes that will mean volunteer coastguard officers are no longer paid for responding to emergencies have been described as a “car crash”.
The officers (CROs), who make up the bulk of the Coastguard Rescue Service, the volunteer arm of HM Coastguard, currently get about £11 an hour - at a minimum of three hours - for attending training and incidents.
But, after a court judgement classed the officers as “workers” while they are carrying out their duties, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said it needs to “change how the service operates”.
It has sparked a “lot of unrest”, The Blackpool Lead was told by a source, who asked not to be named.
“And it would be foolish to think that nationally we’ll not see resignations and reduced levels of commitment later this year.
