Blackpool Airport new terminal and building work timeline confirmed
Work to start on a step towards the Silicon Sands redevelopment of the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone as new 'executive terminal' would have space for 45 passengers
Building work is expected to start in Spring 2025 for a new small terminal building and offices as redevelopment work at Blackpool Airport continues.
Blackpool Council gained planning permission for the new security and executive terminal which has space for up to 45 passengers.
The current buildings on the land are more than two decades old.
The council says £620,000 is earmarked for the work to be completed by Spacebuilder Ltd who have worked on Liverpool John Lennon, Exeter and Bournemouth airports.
Chair of the board at Blackpool Airport Operations, councillor Gillian Campbell said: “This new building would allow us to grow executive flights by offering more space as well as improved security, while a new building will also provide a modern and welcoming entrance that is more suitable as a first impression for departing or arriving visitors.
“Now we have the agreements in place, we’re keen for the building to start early next year and be ready in time for summer.
"We’re expecting this work to be complete with minimal impacts on airport operations but will keep all our customers in the surrounding hangars updated throughout the build.”
Commercial flights resuming from the airport remain ruled-out as the council pursues the Silicon Sands scheme to put in a 'low carbon data centre campus' across the airport site.
Funding for the airport regeneration scheme is in part coming from the Lancashire Combined County Authority devolution deal announced in November.
Cabinet member for built environment and economy at Blackpool Council, councillor Mark Smith, said: “We’re working hard to make sure that we can support an airport that is commercially successful and a leading transport hub, and one that drives the growth of our Enterprise Zone. “These offices would give the airport more scope to attract new business and customers.
"It also allows us to nurture the growth of the airport, while releasing the land for high end data centre companies to invest in Silicon Sands and create well paid jobs for local people.”
The Blackpool Airport site was bought by the council in September 2017 with the council saying otherwise it faced permanent closure.
