Blackpool Airport angling to appear in top-tier films and TV shows
Commercial flights might not be on the menu for Blackpool Airport - but bosses are hoping to attract top tier TV and film producers, Shelagh Parkinson reports
Blackpool Airport is hoping to get itself on the radar of film producers and directors on the look-out for a movie location.
The council-owned airfield has already provided the back-drop for high-profile shows such as Top Gear, and bosses are now hoping to attract more interest from film-makers.
Steve Peters, managing director at Blackpool Airport, said: “Our airport aprons and hangars provide the perfect back drop for a whole host of large-scale filming opportunities.
“From Top Gear to Disney+ as well as a shoot for a high-end fashion brand, we can accommodate larger crews and currently have a compound available for catering and assorted support vehicles.
“Our various teams are on hand to assist with every aspect of what film makers need and we can also work with our on-site and off-site customers to source ‘props’ from Legacy aircraft to two-seater Chipmunks.
“With its rich history and versatile spaces, Blackpool Airport offers a unique blend of modern amenities and historical charm, making it a prime location for any production.”
Opened in 1909, the airport was originally a Battle of Britain aerodrome and is the base for numerous aviation operators.
The airport’s website says: “Its coastal location also makes for dramatic shots from the air – with filming from light aircraft and using drones both possible, subject to the correct permissions.
“We are also able to support production companies in providing the airport fire service for filming or safety duties, there are usually plentiful business jets and helicopters on the tarmac for background shots and we can help you source fixed wing and rotary aircraft for both filming and transport.”
In 2020, the airport hosted the BBC Top Gear team as presenter Paddy McGuinness tested out his all-electric ice cream van ‘Mr Nippy’ on the airfield, and it has also been used by clothing brands and the NHS.
During election campaigns this year, calls were made for Blackpool to have a film studio with supporters of the idea saying it would bring investment and jobs.
